When to USE Italics

For a complete list, refer to the Publication Manual.

-Title of books, periodicals, microfilm publications

-Introduction of a new, technical, or key term or label (after first use, do not italicize) (i.e., the box labeled empty)

-Words that could be misread (i.e., the small group [meaning a designation, not a group size])

-Letters used as statistical symbols (i.e., t test)

-Periodical volume numbers in reference lists (i.e., 26(3), 46-67)
